Submission to the Disability Royal Commission – Restrictive Practices issues paper

The RACGP provided a submission to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability in response to the Restrictive practices issues paper.

The submission covers the following topics:

  • Restrictive practices in general practice and in other healthcare settings
  • Frequency, circumstances and other factors that contribute to the use of restrictive practices
  • The effects of restrictive practices
  • Gaps (and subsequent impacts) in current approaches to restrictive practices
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability
  • Rules and safeguards that should be applied in the use of restrictive practices
  • Preventing, avoiding, minimising restrictive practices
  • Alternatives to restrictive practices to prevent or address behaviours of concern
