Response to the Strategic Directions for Australian Maternity Services

The RACGP has provided comment on the Department of Health's second round of consultation for the Strategic Directions for Australian Maternity Services.

The draft document is part of the wider National Strategic Approach to Maternity Services (NSAMS) project. This is the second round of consultation on the document.The RACGP provided input to the first round of consultation via a survey.

In the response, the RACGP highlights:

  • the need for specificity to the Australian context;
  • the important role of GPs in obstetric care, who are key to ensuring continuity of care;
  • the ongoing cultural issues between some midwife services and some obstetric services; and,
  • the required focus on the risks, costs and harms of overdiagnosis.
