Date: 9 August 2017
In March 2017, the Department of Health announced that it would be reviewing the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Support Program.
Implemented in 2010, this program was originally intended to provide GP registrars with a 12-month period of exposure in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health setting during their core vocational training. The aim of this program is to increase GP registrars’ cultural competence within the standards and curricula of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACCRM).
As part of this review, RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health consulted widely and prepared its response on the feedback received. The Faculty identified that the quality of training in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health posts must be the key priority of the program.
