The Productivity Commission is conducting a review of the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Agreement which sets out the shared intention of the Commonwealth, state and territory governments to work in partnership to improve the mental health of all Australians, reduce the rate of suicide toward zero, and ensure the sustainability and enhance the services of the Australian mental health and suicide prevention system.
The RACGP’s response recommends the Agreement includes the central role of GPs, social prescribing, and recognise that social determinants can influence a person’s mental health. The response highlights adequate remuneration for general practice, the importance of interprofessional collaboration, reducing fragmentation of care and holistic care including addressing the physical health of people living with mental illness.
