The RACGP has provided a submission to the Department of Health and Aged Care’s (DoHAC) review of MBS health assessment items.

The RACGP supports a moderate approach to reframing MBS health assessment items. Our key recommendations include:

  • ensuring health assessments are aligned with the RACGP Red Book
  • increased promotion and education for providers
  • linking the items to MyMedicare whilst maintaining patient choice
  • reducing age eligibility for the over-75s health assessment
  • expanding target groups for time-based assessments
  • ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health assessments (item 715) align with the NACCHO-RACGP National Guide.

Feedback from the consultation process will assist in DoHAC’s advice to the Minister for Health and Aged Care on the future of these items. Any changes will require consideration through Budget processes.
