The RACGP has provided a submission to the Australian Centre for Disease Control (CDC) consultation on how the Australian CDC plans to use data.
In summary the RACGP recommended:
- a data driven plan is implemented to support prevention and response to public health emergencies and management of communicable and non-communicable diseases, now and into the future
- the value of primary care data is recognised and prioritised for appropriate and effective interpretation and utilisation
- appropriate data governance is established to guide secondary use of primary care data by the CDC, including Indigenous data sovereignty
- special considerations are applied for the use of data from certain patient groups
- patients are made aware of how their health data is used as protecting patient privacy is paramount
- the CDC recognises the significant responsibility to protect communities through appropriate communication of data trends and disease outcomes
- establishing interoperability standards to increase the ability of practices to share quality data with the CDC.
