RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health submitted its response to the Department of Health’s Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Salary Support Program.
The program which was implemented in 2010, was originally intended to provide GP registrars with a 12-month period of exposure in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health setting during their core vocational training.
The aim of this program was to increase GP registrars’ cultural competence within the standards and curricula of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACCRM).
RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health identified that the quality of training in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health training posts must be the key priority of the program. The faculty consulted widely and prepared its response based on the feedback received.
