Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health awards

Over it's lifetime, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health faculty has celebrated many significant achivements. 

Central to this has been the hard work of members, GPs in training and medical students, whose achivements we recognise through our annual awards. 

Do you know an RACGP member or GP(s) who advocates for the improvemet of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health? Or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander GP in training or medical student who is studying at an Australian University who's  interested in general practice? If so, nominate them for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health award. 


The Standing Strong award celebrates partnerships between GPs and communities. This award is presented to an Fellow(s) or members(s) of the RACGP who have worked together with a Aborignal and/or Torres Strait Islander person or community group to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Isander people.

Elibility criteria:

  • Any fellow or member of the RACGP or any group of GPs (one of whom must be a Fellow or member of the RACGP) that has worked in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Any Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person or community group who has worked with a GP(s) - who is a Fellow or member of the RACGP - to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. 


The nomination must involve a partnership between GP(s) and an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person or community group. Such partnerships could include:

  • providing quality healthcare, accees to healthcare and/or continuity of care to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people
  • running an event or progra that encourages better health outcomes
  • educating other to enable them to provide high-quality, culturally appropriate healthcare
  • introducing changes to healthcare services that result in better health outcomes 
  • conducting research into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health for the purpose of improving health outcomes


RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health invites Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander GPs in training to nominate for the Growing Strong award. 

Eligibilty criteria:

  • nominees must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • currently be on the RACGP's GP training pathway
  • have an interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
  • demonstrate a commitment to giving back to the community.

Nominees must also provide a written statement outstanding how the Growing Strong award would support their professional development.


The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Medical Student Bursary award is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students currently studying at an Australian university.

Eligibilty criteria:

  • nominees for the Medical Student award must be a current Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander medical student at an Australian university
  • have an interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and a career in general practice

Nominees must also provide a written statement outlining how the award would support their professional development.
