Chair’s report December 2021

At the December 2021 Board meeting, we spent significant time on two key issues for the college that will undoubtedly be a great focus in 2022 – profession-led, community-based training (PLT) and the RACGP strategy for 2022 and beyond.

In terms of PLT, we focused on key pieces of work and relationships.

The key piece of work focusing our attention at the moment is responding to the government grant opportunity. This work will inform the design, funding and deliverables of PLT. The Board took a strong stance on ensuring that – notwithstanding the competing priorities of government, the Department of Health and stakeholders – GP training is too important to compromise. Accordingly, the Board resolved to work with the Department of Health on a training design that meets the needs of our members and the college.

Other important PLT work includes collaborating with the regional training organisation sector and other stakeholders. We’re working closely with GP Synergy on alignment over the PLT transition period and beyond, and we’ve reached out to the wider sector in the spirit of collaboration.

In relation to the RACGP’s strategy, our newly appointed CEO Paul Wappett is taking the opportunity to check in on the current strategy and work with the Board to ensure it resonates with members. The focus of the review will be on the purpose, goals and objectives of the college. This work will be informed by the data we’ve received from members, including the Member census data.

The Board spent some time planning for a busy 2022. We look forward to continuing nationwide member engagement activities as part of a Board roadshow in 2022.

This year has been another unpredictable and, in a lot of ways, difficult year for our members. Whether it was responding to the many health challenges of the pandemic or continuing to deliver world-class care to patients every day, we recognise and thank you.

On behalf of the RACGP Board, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and healthy festive season and a happy new year.
