Submission to Health Workforce Australia - Health Professionals Prescribing Pathway (HPPP) Project in Australia Consultation

29 May 2012

Health Workforce Australia’s Health Professionals Prescribing Pathway (HPPP) Project aims to develop a nationally consistent approach to prescribing by health professionals other than medical practitioners that supports safe practice, quality use of medicines and effectiveness of healthcare services.

The attached submission expresses the College’s concerns that a system that permits multiple prescribers risks fragmenting patient care and putting patient safety at risk. We outline the principles that should underpin any national approach to health professionals prescribing to ensure patient safety is not compromised, including the maintenance of the central role of the GP in ensuring safe, effective and coordinated patient centred care.
