Growing Strong Award

Through the generous donation of Dr Nathan Pinskier and Mrs Susan Pinskier, RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health have established the ’Growing Strong Award’. The award was established to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander GP registrars during the early stages of their GP career. The award will be presented each year at the RACGP’s annual conference, with the recipient receiving support to attend the conference (including airfares, accommodation and registration), with all residual funding going towards the recipient’s examination fees.

The ’Growing Strong Award’ which is aimed at supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander registrars, complements the RACGP’s existing ‘Standing Strong Award’ open to Fellows who are working to improve the health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Nominations for the 2017 Growing Strong Award open on April 2017.

Standing Strong Together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award

Each year, RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health presents the Standing Strong Together Award to a Fellow, member of the RACGP or an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person who have contributed to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Nominations are open to all Fellows, members of the RACGP and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia.

The Award winner will receive a commemorative trophy which will be presented at RACGP’s annual conference. The RACGP will fund the winners' (two representatives) return economy class airfare and accommodation to attend the Academic Session and Fellowship and Awards Ceremony at the annual conference.

In 2016, the Standing Strong Together award was awarded to Dr Jamie Fernando and the Glen Centre – Central Coast Drug and Alcohol Residential Rehabilitation. Dr Jamie Fernando is a Gamilaroi-Weilwan man with extensive experience as a GP in the Aboriginal community controlled health sector. The Glen Centre is an award-winning drug and alcohol rehabilitation service on the Central Coast of New South Wales (NSW). It is an Aboriginal community controlled health organisation, with a board of directors representing the Aboriginal community.

Dr Fernando and the Glen Centre worked together to establish a new medical clinic at the facility. The medical clinic employs a multifaceted approach that engages the centre’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, reintroducing them to primary healthcare.
