Standing Strong Together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award

Nominations open from 1 March to 30 June

History

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standing Strong Together Award was established in response to a recommendation from the third national face to face meeting of general practitioners and others working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

The Standing Strong Together for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health meeting, held in Brisbane on 9 October 2006, was jointly convened by the RACGP, the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO), the Australian Indigenous Doctor's Association, the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine and General Practice Registrars Australia. It showcased many examples of the outcomes achieved when Indigenous people and GPs work together to improve Indigenous health outcomes.

The award

The award is made annually to a fellow or member of the RACGP and to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who have worked in an effective partnership producing substantial outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

The award will be for a total of $5000, which is to be used for the purposes of providing an educational opportunity for the recipients or to continue their work. Each recipient will also receive a commemorative certificate to be presented at the annual scientific convention or annual general meeting of the RACGP.

The award will be judged by a committee including the chair of NACCHO or their nominee.

It is to be noted that only in rare instances will this award be made to current employees of the RACGP.
