The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has established a group of experienced and respected Fellows from each state faculty called the Corlis Travelling Fellows.

Dr Patricia Montanaro has been appointed as the SA&NT Faculty Corlis Fellow.

Explanation of the Role

The Corlis Travelling Fellows provide advice to:

  • RACGP Vocational Training Accreditation Subcommittees and the RACGP Censors on accreditation of training posts outside usual general practice
  • Provide regional leadership and support for education events
  • Act as a local mentor
  • Liaise with universities, Regional Training Providers, Divisions/ Networks of General Practice and Rural Workforce Agencies and promote the college at regional meetings and events

Experience

Each Corlis Travelling Fellow is highly experienced, especially in the education and training leading to FRACGP and well regarded within the college.

Dr Patricia Montanaro has been working in the Australian medical industry as a General Practitioner for over 20 years. She achieved her M.B.B.S in 1986 and passed the Fellowship exam in 1992. She currently practices at the Kensington Road Medical Centre.

Patricia is a current Board Member GP Partners Adelaide (formerly ACE Division of General Practice), RACGP Exam Panel Member, and most recently a Board Member of the SA&NT Faculty of the RACGP.

Patricia has been actively involved in many areas of the RACGP including 17 years as a Member of the Exam Panel, 3 years as an External Clinical Teacher, past Co-coordinator of General Practice Training Woman’s and Children’s Hospital and a G.P. Supervisor at an Accredited Training Practice through the RACGP Training Program.

Plan for 2010

Dr Montanaro plans to work with key stakeholders in SA and NT to provide a mentor role to GP Registrars and IMGs alike. She will be attending a number of College functions, the Faculty Exam, as well as workshops and conferences run by organisations such as local RTPs and RDWA. Dr Montanaro will also be visiting practices directly to discuss issues with local and regional GPs, in their own areas.

Dr Montanaro will be attending the Fellowship Exams being run in SA and NT, as well as the GP’10 Conference in Cairns in October. Dr Montanaro is available to offer professional support and a collegial ear to any College member in need.

Reporting and Outcomes

Dr Montanaro will liaise on an ongoing basis with the State Manager, Stephenie Clota and the Chair of the SA/NT Faculty, Prof. Nigel Stocks. Dr Montanaro will continue to keep Faculty Board updated of her activities and along with other Corlis Fellows provide an annual report at the GP’10 Conference.
