Brian Williams Award: Rural pathway

The RACGP’s National Rural Faculty (NRF) commemorates the work of the late Dr Brian Williams, a long-time rural advocate and former Director of the WA Centre for Remote and Rural Medicine, by recognising an outstanding rural GP whose mentoring and support enables other rural GPs to dedicate themselves to their patients, family and communities. South Australia’s Dr Ken Wanguhu was surprised when he was named the 2015 recipient of award. ‘I can’t get over it,’ he told Good Practice. ‘I would like to know who nominated me because it is very, very fl attering. I did not expect it and I am a bit overwhelmed, to be honest.’ Growing up in Kenya, Dr Wanguhu’s altruistic nature meant he was often looking to help those in need, and he always knew he wanted to be involved in medicine and practise as a doctor. ‘It is one of those things that I always wanted to pursue since I was a child because I always thought medicine and health were interesting,’ he said. ‘I looked at the doctors around me when I was growing up and I just really admired all the work that they did and I wanted to help people. ‘The doctors in my village were an important part of the community and we looked up to them.’
