FRACGP Exams: Testing times

The majority of doctors who wish to become RACGP Fellows must first pass three exams before they can achieve their goal. The exams are the most common and popular pathway doctors take to become a recognised GP in Australia. The Key Feature Problems (KFP) and Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) are held twice a year in all major Australian cities and several regional centres, while the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) is held twice a year in major cities only.

‘These exams are about a professional college setting assessments itself where it recognises that somebody has finished their training or they are at a point now where they can be recognised as part of the speciality, as part of the Fellowship of the RACGP,’ Assessment Panel Chair of Victoria Dr Cameron Loy told Good Practice.

The KFP is made up of 26 general practice cases over three-and-a-half hours and tests decision-making skills, while the AKT consists of 150 questions over a four-hour period and tests the knowledge required for the certification to enter unsupervised general practice.

The OSCE, on the other hand, is a more practical exam aimed at testing knowledge, clinical reasoning, clinical and communication skills, and professional attitudes of the would-be GPs.
