About education and the RACGP

Education is one of the core business areas of the RACGP. The scope of the education portfolio within the college encompasses all aspects of general practice education, vocational training, and continuing professional development, reflecting the journey of general practice and lifelong learning.

RACGP National Standing Committee – Education (NSC-Ed)

The NSC-Ed was established in 2002. As the overarching education committee within the college responsible for all aspects of General Practice education, ranging from medical student through pre-vocational and registrar phases to experienced general practitioner, the roles of the NSC-Ed are to:

  1. Provide strategic advice and policy direction:
    • Clarify and maintain for Council a strategic agenda for general practice education in Australia from the perspective of the specialty of general practice;
    • Provide such strategic education policies to Council as scoping of the professional environment indicates is necessary;
    • Provide the RACGP Council with information and advice on education-related issues in general practice as requested ;
    • Provide education management with strategic and policy advice to inform business planning based on evaluation of education activity and professional development needs identification.
  2. Provide ongoing evaluation and renewal of the College’s curriculum:
    • Review evaluation data on the performance of the College’s curriculum based on a comprehensive evaluation framework.;
    • Provide detailed and timely advice to education management on changes and improvements required to ensure the contemporary relevance of the curriculum to national and international medical education benchmarks;
    • Provide timely advice and drafts of improved curricula documentation to Council for approval or feedback ;
    • Ensure College educational products, services and programs reflect the curriculum and its theoretical and evidence base.
  3. Ensure the College meets ongoing academic governance needs:
    • Review, update and develop as required College policies pertaining to academic governance
    • In particular, monitor College performance in devolved or sub-contracted delivery of the College’s curriculum through processes such as the accreditation of regional training providers (RTPs) and their accreditation of training posts and trainers on the College’s behalf; and the College’s own accreditation in the specialty of general practice by the Australian Medical Council
    • Provide timely strategic and policy advice to Council on the College’s academic governance needs and performance, for approval as required.
