Background

The MHPA includes representation from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN).

Each member organisation has responsibility for the professional standards applying to its members, and each is recognised as an organisation that focuses on promoting quality in practice.

RACGP

The RACGP's mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities across Australia by supporting current and future members in their pursuit of clinical excellence, and ensuring high quality clinical practice, education, and research for Australian general practice.

The RACGP actively embraces its responsibility to take a leadership role in standard-setting, quality, education, advocacy and support, quality care and research for both its members and for the general practice profession at large.

Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP)

Is the principal organisation representing the medical specialty of psychiatry in Australasia and New Zealand and has responsibility for training, examining and awarding the qualification of Fellowship of the College to medical practitioners.

Australian Psychological Society (APS)

The APS aims to raise the profile of psychology and enhance its standing, both as a discipline and a profession, through the support of high standards for the profession, the advancement of psychology as a science and its contribution to community wellbeing.

Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN)

ACMHN is the peak body for mental health nurses and the only body that solely represents mental health nurses in Australia . The Australia College of Mental Heath Nurses is constantly striving to ensure mental health nursing remains a focal point on all agendas in relation to mental health at local, state and national levels.

The College's Credentialing for Practice Program has been selected as the criteria on which a mental health nurse will be eligible for a Medicare provider number, and work with psychiatrists and general practitioners under the Mental Health Nurse Incentive Program through COAG.

MHPA Secretariat

The secretariat and chair of the MHPA rotates regularly. Secretariat services are also shared by the four representative organisations.
