Dr Patrick Giltrap, a general practitioner based in Gilgandra in central-west New South Wales, has been awarded The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ (RACGP) GP of the Year Award for 2005.

The GP of the Year Award recognises an individual general practitioner’s understanding of, and commitment to general practice; their service to their community; and their involvement in ongoing training and continuing professional development.

Presenting the award tonight at the RACGP Annual Scientific Convention in Darwin, RACGP President Professor Michael Kidd congratulated Dr Giltrap and gave thanks for his outstanding service to the college, to general practice and to the Australian community.

“Dr Giltrap has a reputation as a general practitioner who is always available to his patients, someone who is caring and compassionate and a deeply committed member of his community,” said Professor Kidd.

“As a general practitioner, Dr Giltrap represents our commitment to whole person care.

“He is passionately committed to general practice education, providing training to general practice registrars and medical students for more than 15 years. Dr Giltrap continues to play a vital role in the training program with his Regional Training Provider.

“His support for local International Medical Graduates as a supervisor for doctors in Gilgandra and Baradine, sees him assisting newly arrived overseas doctors as they work to pass the Australian Medical Council exam.

“In addition to tonight’s award, Dr Giltrap’s community work has been recognised this year with the Citizen Of The Year For Gilgandra 2005 award. His commitment to his community is demonstrated by his after hours medical work and his compassion for patients and their families while providing palliative care.

“Dr Giltrap is an excellent advocate for general practice in the Gilgandra community. He voluntarily conducts educational sessions at local schools and for community organisations, as well as working to support local charities.

“Dr Giltrap’s commitment to his patients is welcome. He gives much of his time to patient follow up and is well respected for his work with the local indigenous community. “He is held in high esteem by his community, and the general practice community as a whole, and is well deserving of the award as the RACGP GP of the Year Award for 2005.”

The winner of the GP of the Year Award receives a $5000 travel scholarship and a profile in Australian Family Physician, the medical journal of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
