Guidelines

Intimate Partner Violence

Intimate partner violence/abuse can be defined as any behaviour within an intimate relationship that causes physical, psychological or sexual harm to those in the relationship. Intimate partner violence/abuse is also known as domestic violence and can be included in the term family violence together with child or elder abuse, for example.

The RACGP has endorsed the Management of the whole family when intimate partner violence is present: guidelines for general practitioners. The guidelines are the result of international collaboration involving primary health care clinicians/researchers in the UK, the US, Netherlands, Canada, the UK led by Dr Angela Taft and Associate Prof Kelsey Hegarty from Australia.

The College is currently reviewing its Women and Violence manual in line with these recommendations and encourages general practitioners around Australia to use the guide.
