RACGP Fellowship

General Practice Recognition Education Program (GPREP)

For doctors preparing for the RACGP Fellowship Assessment.

The General Practice Recognition Education Program (GPREP) series supports the preparation of doctors working towards professional recognition as General Practitioners in Australia.

We acknowledge that every doctor's preparation needs are different, and so we have made the Series extremely flexible.

The GPREP Series provides an emphasis on experiential learning and offers specific learning opportunities, teaching and feedback to doctors who are currently working in general practice.

The GPREP Preparation Series includes:

GPREPintensive

A 6 month individually tailored clinical exam preparation program including workshops, small group learning, online education, one to one mentoring and clinical observation. FEE-HELP available

GPREPintensive provides the most comprehensive preparation support for the RACGP Fellowship exam. It is proven to significantly enhance your ability to successfully complete the exam, and also to provide the most accurate feedback as to your likelihood of passing.

The six month program is structured around the RACGP domains of General Practice and is presented as online and unit based self-directed learning activities, workshops, small group learning sessions, one to one meetings and observation of patient consultations.

All Medical Educators involved in the program are in active general practice as well as Fellows of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and many are FRACGP examiners with a sound working knowledge of the FRACGP assessment process.

The GPREPintensive units are:

  • workshop series
  • small group learning teleconferences
  • clinical observation
  • mentoring
  • gplearning
  • educational units

GPREPadvanced

A less intensive 6 month exam preparation program which includes workshops and small group learning with online educational support. FEE-HELP available.

A less intensive six month program which focuses on developing proficiency in exam technique through workshop participation, small group discussion and online activities.

The program is designed for those who feel confident in their own preparation strategies but want to gain further insight into the RACGP Fellowship Examination Process and, through practice and feedback, increase their competency in exam technique.

The GPREPadvanced units are:

  • workshop series
  • small group learning teleconferences

GPREPunits

To offer the maximum degree of flexibility doctors may purchase any unit of the GPREP Preparation Series, be it as a once off preparation exercise or as a supplement to the GPREPadvanced program.

Workshop series

Three full day workshops run over six months. The workshops aim to:

  • develop and refine the skills involved in history taking, physical examination, clinical management, practical procedures and emergencies through self evaluation, practice, feedback and review
  • practically apply clinical knowledge within the context of the Australian health care system, including population differences, practice management and medico-legal issues
  • evaluate competence in areas of development.

The activities are designed to review existing and develop new clinical knowledge:

  • multiple choice questions and key feature problems related to the workshop
  • topics in both an exam mode and education mode
  • clinical knowledge cases in education mode
  • clinical knowledge development activities
  • access to reference materials such as Harrison's Online

Small Group Learning Teleconferences (6)

Exceptionally popular, these monthly group learning activities provide participants with a variety of clinical presentations common within the Australian General Practice context.

The teleconferences are designed to complement full time General Practice by enabling you to call in from your home or practice outside normal practice hours.

Each month the teleconference is supported with online activities which explore and expand on topics addressed within the small group sessions. These support activities can be either used in preparation for the teleconferences or to expand the topic afterwards.

Clinical Observation

An experienced Medical Educator will observe you in your practice, and provide guidance and feedback about your consultation and clinical management style in relation to the standards of the RACGP.

It is from these meetings that medical educators feel that they can most accurately advise participants about their readiness to sit the exam. Course participants rate the time they spend in their practice with Medical Educators as a valuable exam preparation exercise.

Mentoring

In line with current vocational training methods, the RACGP has made Medical Educator mentor meetings available to GPREP candidates. These one-to-one meetings are a flexible and effective way to provide intensive preparation assistance. Medical Educators meet with you periodically over your preparation time to:

  • review the way in which you are studying, ensuring that you are on target for the exam
  • review topic areas where you have identified problems
  • practice clinical role plays to provide you with feedback about your consultation style
  • address your individual concerns.

gplearning

The RACGP's new online learning site has further enhanced the equity of access to educational activities and resources for those preparing for the Fellowship Examination.

The activities online include multiple choice questions, key feature problems and interactive case studies which explore key learning areas within the 5 domains of General Practice as defined by the RACGP.

Educational Units

The RACGP has developed independent learning units for specialty areas within General Practice. The education units have been developed by our senior medical educators and are based on 25 years experience in vocational training for general practitioners.

Each unit provides guided educational activities as well as directed learning. The Educational package is complemented with a reference library, including General practice by John Murtagh.
