Regional training provider information and resources

This webpage has been developed to provide regional training providers with information and resources to assist in the delivery of quality general practice training. The webpage will continue to be updated as further resources are developed.

Accreditation of an advanced or extended skills post overseas

An application form must be completed by GP Registrars seeking to undertake mandatory extended skills posts or optional advanced rural skills posts overseas. Both of these types of posts may be taken overseas. However, all overseas posts must be prospectively approved by the RACGP Censor in Chief.

Extended skills post

The aim of the extended skills term is to allow the GP registrar to further his/her knowledge and/or skills in an area of interest or weakness. An extended skills term is a six months full time position, although part time can be arranged.

Approval of an extended skills post overseas consists of two areas -

  1. Demonstrating that the nominated post has been approved to take registrars, eg. for a hospital or a general practice, that it is accredited by the relevant learned College or medical training program in that country.
  2. Sending the completed application form with the generic learning plan to the RACGP.

The RTP must approve the registrar's learning plan and this must be on the template or attached to the application form.

Advanced rural skills post (ARSP)

Advanced rural skills training can be undertaken as a six month placement as an extended skills post, or as a structured 12 month placement for the Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice / Graduate Diploma of Rural General Practice.

If the ARSP is intended to count towards the RACGP Fellowship in Advanced Rural General Practice / Graduate Diploma of Rural General Practice, the application consists of two main parts -

  1. Demonstrating that the nominated post has current accreditation by the RACGP.
  2. Sending the completed application form and generic learning plan to the RACGP.

The rural censor must approve the registrar's learning plan and this must be on the template or attached to the application form.

Within three months of completion of the post the registrar must provide a report on the experience and learning opportunities undertaken. The report is to be signed by the registrar, the training supervisors and the representative of the regional training provider.

To be accepted as part of training, all documentation must be submitted to the Censor in Chief for consideration and censorial approval.

The application and report form are available for downloading from the link below. The regional training provider must liaise with the registrar concerning the completion of the form.
