This week the Australian Government announced reforms to the policy of mandatory detention for asylum seekers. I welcome some of these changes. The most important reform announced by Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Senator Chris Evans is the exclusion of children from detention.

Members will be interested to know that the Australian Government has announced that the National Preventative Health Taskforce will be releasing a discussion paper in September on the Australian Government's blueprint for refocusing the health system on prevention.

The RACGP is calling on interested members to help participate in the development of an integrative medicine (IM) subfaculty, a proposed subfaculty of the proposed specific interest faculty of the RACGP.

In considering its reforms to the health system and ways to tackle the health workforce crisis, we are urging the Australian Government to put patients first. Recent data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows the general practice workforce shrank by 9 percent between 1997 and 2005; many patients simply can't get in to see a doctor.
