The College congratulates the National Rural Health Alliance on the appointment of two of our National Rural Faculty members to their Board. Dr Jenny May (Rural Doctor’s Association of Australia) continues her outstanding work as Chair and Dr Kathryn Kirkpatrick (RACGP National Rural Faculty Chair) has been elected to the role of Deputy Chair.

The Federal Government is still in caretaker mode and the outcome of the Federal Election is yet to be decided but for any Australian government, support for the central role of general practice in the health system should be the priority health reform. Strong general practice will lead to a fairer and more efficient health system.

The Labor Party announced this week that if re-elected it will invest $392.3 million in online consultations and videoconferencing across a range of specialties. The investment will include financial incentives for GPs and specialists who deliver online services ($56.8 million), as well as funding to support innovative training and supervision for health professionals using online technologies ($35 million).

This week, the Labor Party announced that income support payments for families with a 4 year old child will be conditional on the completion of a health assessment, such as the 'Healthy Kids Check', should the Labour Government be re-elected.

The College has developed a position statement in regards to the general practice issues we would like to see On 5 August Tony Abbott, leader of the Opposition, released the Coalition’s health policy. The Coalition’s policy for general practice includes $350 million to increase Medicare rebates for longer consultations, $115 million to increase and expand Medicare rebates for practice nurses, $165 million to increase after hours Medicare rebates and retain and strengthen the After Hours Practice Incentive Payment (PIP), $200 million for infrastructure grants of up to $250 000 for existing practices and $3 million for a clinical best practice GP referral process for magnetic resonance imaging services. The policy also promises $3.1 billion for 2800 hospital beds.

As Australia goes to the polls we need a clear commitment to meaningful healthcare reform from both Labor and the Coalition. Regardless of who forms government after 21 August, the College is committed to continuing to work to improve access for local communities to high quality healthcare.

Over the past 3 months, the College has been critical of the government’s proposed plan for ‘block’ or ‘capitated’ funding for people with diabetes. The College fully supports the aims of the government to improve care for people with diabetes but, as currently proposed, the government’s diabetes program does not have College support.

Following the passing of the Healthcare Identifiers Bill, 2010 through federal parliament, the e-health rollout has finally received the green light and the College is happy to announce its latest e-health initiative in partnership with Telstra.

The Australian Government is offering primary care infrastructure grants to enable existing general practices to expand or upgrade space for GPs, nurses or allied health professionals. Grants of up to $500 000 are open to any eligible organisation or individual operating an existing general practice, primary care or community health service, or Aboriginal medical service.
