The RACGP and NAC Asthma Research Award

Introduction

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and National Asthma Council Australia (NAC) Asthma Research Award was created to encourage research into asthma. Funded by the NAC to the value of $500, the award has been offered annually since 2002.

The award is awarded to the best presenter of an asthma-related abstract or poster at the RACGP Annual Scientific Convention.

Independent representatives from the RACGP National Standing Committee–Research (NSC-R) and the NAC GP Asthma Group judge the award, which is presented during the closing ceremony of the RACGP Annual Scientific Convention GP’11, 6-8 October 2011.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the RACGP and National Asthma Council Award, an individual must be

  • a GP or GP registrar
  • a member of the RACGP
  • presenting an asthma-related paper or poster at the 2011 RACGP Annual Conference
  • a major contributor to the research study being presented

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be judged against the following criteria:

Quality of research presented

  • Significance of study to asthma
  • Sufficient background presented for understanding of the study
  • Methods utilised clearly explained
  • Interpretation justified by research data
  • Figures/tables clearly convey intended information
  • Conclusions clearly described and supported by results

Quality of presentation

  • Focus to the target audience
  • Structure of presentation, including time
  • Clear and concise presentation (should include the major points presented on the poster)
  • Questions directly and sufficiently answered and limitations understood

Please mail the completed application form to the RACGP Foundation Manager and e-mail the same form to research@racgp.org.au.

Conditions

  1. Personal information provided to RACGP by award applicants will be used for the purposes of administering the award. The RACGP Privacy Statement explains how RACGP collects and uses personal information provided to the RACGP and how it can be accessed.
  2. By applying for the award, each applicant will have consented to permit RACGP and/or NAC to publicise their name, their institution, and the title/abstract of their research project

Selection Process

  1. The RACGP is responsible for the independent, objective evaluation and review of award applications. All decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  2. The RACGP Foundation Manager will review all applications and eliminate those that do not meet the eligibility criteria.
  3. Independent judges from the RACGP NSC-R and the NAC GP Asthma Group will attend each applicant’s presentation and individually score it against the criteria above.
  4. All applicants’ scores will be tallied and the award presented to the applicant with the highest score.
  5. The judges are unable to provide feedback to individual applicants. The score sheets are confidential and remain the property of the RACGP. 
  6. The successful applicant will receive their award at the closing ceremony of the RACGP Annual Conference (GP11), 8 October 2011.

Reporting Requirements

  1. The award recipient is expected to submit the following items to the RACGP no later than 2 weeks after receiving the award:
    1. a short (1-2 paragraph) biography
    2. a short (1-2 paragraph) “layman’s” summary of the project
    3. a passport sized photograph (in an electronic format)

These will be used for publication on the RACGP website, NAC website or in relevant RACGP and NAC publications.
