Lumps and swellings

For lumps and swellings in the scrotum, see Genital problems in boys.

Consult this chart if your child has lumps or swellings on any area of the body. Lumps and swellings under the surface of the skin are often lymph nodes, commonly known as glands, that have enlarged in response to an infection. Other lumps and swellings may be due to injuries, bites, or stings. A persistent lump or swelling should always be examined by a doctor so that the cause can be established. However, there is rarely cause for serious concern in a child.
