During the past month, GPs and practices have been confronted with a myriad of seemingly conflicting statements and opinions regarding the introduction of the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR). As the PCEHR initiative will be available from 1 July 2012, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (“the College”) is keen to assist members in any way possible in managing this process, including clarifying issues regarding implementation well before July 2012.

This document formulates the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ (RACGP or ‘the College’) position on the PCEHR, including the role of the RACGP, the changing healthcare landscape, general practice in e-health and the role of general practice in the development of the PCEHR, general practitioner responsibility and potential risks.
