Education and training

Education is the core business of the College. The Education department manages and hosts programs to provide support and training throughout the life cycle of a general practitioner, which will generally constitute:

AMC Accreditation

The RACGP is very pleased to announce that the Australian Medical Council (AMC) has extended the accreditation of the college for its general practice education standards and processes to the maximum possible period, to December 2009. In August 2006 the RACGP hosted a six person review team from the AMC led by Professor Richard Smallwood. The RACGP received initial AMC accreditation of our education and training programs in 2003.

New Curriculum for General Practice

Our training curriculum review is nearing completion. It is a broader document than before, with guidance included as to how to learn across the different domains of general practice and the life cycle stages of general practice.

This underpinning idea of the life cycle of general practice with different supports at different times will allow the curriculum to be used in vocational training, as it traditionally has been, but also be used for quality assurance and continuing professional development (QA&CPD) and in the prevocational settings. This is a large undertaking for our college, with a steering committee and 26 writing groups. It is planned the review will be ready for the RACGP 2006 Annual Scientific Convention, and this will be an ongoing activity for the education department

Governance of the Education Directorate

The Education services of the College are structured to ensure that leadership and capacity across core educational functions are enhanced, internal processes are streamlined and integrated, internal and external communications are effective, and resources to deliver core business are maximised.

The National Standing Committee on Education (NSC-Edu) is the overarching education committee within the College responsible for all aspects of General Practice education, from medical student to registrar to experienced general practitioner. The NSC-Edu leads strategic direction in Education within the College, and key policies are developed by and within three linked subcommittees which follow general practitioners' natural progression throughout a professional lifetime - specifically:

  • Prevocational Subcommittee
  • Vocational Training Subcommittee
  • QA&CPD Subcommittee

For more information about the committees and the Governance fo the Education directorate, see: National Standing Committee - Education.
