Review of the Curriculum for Australian General Practice

The College has been reviewing and writing the RACGP Curriculum for Australian General Practice. This is a major RACGP project that was officially launched at the RACGP Annual Scientific Convention in Sydney 6 October 2007.

The RACGP Curriculum for Australian General Practice was last reviewed in 1998 prior to the introduction of the Commonwealth's new system for general practice training. The new RACGP curriculum needs to be both aligned with the current training program for general practice registrars and also be relevant for all general practitioners throughout their working lives.

The RACGP is seeking to undertake the review of the curriculum in an open, transparent and timely fashion that engages a wide range of stakeholders.

Curriculum review focus and objectives

The College’s objective in undertaking curriculum review is always to define the discipline of general practice and to ensure that our curriculum continues to reflect both the fundamental and unchanging nature of Australian General Practice and the evolution of the discipline in response to community needs and advances in science and technology.

The RACGP Curriculum for Australian General Practice reflects the lifecycle of general practice professionally and educationally AND:

  • contains a quality assured education program at its core that facilitates the development of general practice knowledge, skills and attitudes
  • be a user friendly curriculum for Australian general practice
  • establishes a layering of the curriculum to allow for syllabus and resource inventories to become part of the framework to assist those wishing to learn and teach general practice topics at all four levels of experience (medical student, prevocational doctor, vocational GP registrar, continuing professional development)
  • establishes an iterative cyclical review of the curriculum based on the triennium business cycle of the College.

Project governance

The review of the Curriculum for Australian general practice is being overseen by the National Steering Committee - Curriculum Review. Curriculum statements have been prepared on thirty four topics by working groups made up of general practitioners and other relevant experts. Statements have been reviewed by the Chief Writer, Dr Ronald McCoy, and the Writing Group. Furthermore, all statements have been reviewed by relevant external stakeholders. The new curriculum will be officially launched at the RACGP Annual Scientific Convention in Sydney on Saturday 6 October 2007.

Next Stage of the Curriculum Review Project

The next stage in the Curriculum Review Project will involve the development of the 'Learning Guide' to accompany each statement within the new RACGP Curriculum for Australian General Practice. The Learning Guide will be based on the best evidence and experience available to the College, and will offer Regional Training Providers (RTPs) syllabus suggestions on particular methods and resources for each statement. It will be the responsibility of the RTPs, in consultation with the RACGP, to develop and deliver the syllabus. The Learning guide for the RACGP Curriculum for Australian General Practice is anticipated to be complete in early 2008.
