Becoming a GP in Australia

Why Fellowship?

The RACGP Fellowship is the admission to the specialty of general practice – a highlight of your career, important recognition from your College and your peers, and represents excellence in general practice.

As such, RACGP assessments are of the highest quality and are developed by assessors who will become your future colleagues, each a general practitioner who offers a wealth of experience.

The RACGP is responsible for maintaining and developing the standards of general practice in Australia. The RACGP’s Fellowship program is held in high esteem around the world and since 1996 the Australian Government has adopted Fellowship of the RACGP (FRACGP) as the standard for certifying competence to deliver unsupervised general practice services in any general practice setting in Australia – urban, regional, rural or remote.

The assessments are delivered in various locations across Australia and delivery of the conjoint Fellowship is delivered in Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Fellowship of the RACGP allows the GP to:

  • Work unsupervised in general practice
  • Claim A1 Medicare rebates
  • Use the post nominal ‘FRACGP’
  • Be recognised as a Fellow through our reciprocal arrangements with New Zealand, Ireland and Canada
