RACGP Specialist Pathway

The RACGP Specialist Pathway is part of a nationally agreed assessment and registration process developed in conjunction with the Australian medical registration boards, Australian Medical Council (AMC), the Australian Department of Health and Ageing and the RACGP. This is a new assessment pathway, leading to College Fellowship and medical registration for doctors who do not hold current Australian medical registration but have recognised general practice qualifications from overseas countries.

The Specialist Pathway Program provides a pathway for International Medical Graduates (IMG) to obtain Fellowship from the RACGP based on an assessment of their previous training and experience in general practice. This provides an opportunity for IMGs who want to work in Australia while making a positive contribution to the health care of the Australian community.

Once Fellowship of the RACGP has been earned, an IMG is entitled to apply for Vocational Registration, with the right to deliver general practice independently to the Australian community.

How to apply:

First, do a ‘self-categorisation’, which will help you understand which Category you may be assigned to.  Using the links on this page to give access to the RACGP self-categorisation information will help you to identify:

  • whether you may be eligible to apply to the Specialist Pathway
  • the eligibility criteria for categorisation by the RACGP as a Category 1, Category 2 or Category 3 SPP applicant
  • requirements for application to the Specialist Pathway
  • how to submit an initial application to the Australian Medical Council (AMC).

Please note that a ‘self-assessment’ is only a guide. The RACGP will make all final eligibility and categorisation decisions.

If you have specific questions, please contact assessment@racgp.org.au or phone 1-800-626-901 (in Australia) or 613-8699-0454 (from overseas) for details.
