Requirements for Fellowship
The College sets the standards for training, examinations and assessments in general practice. Attainment of the Fellowship of the RACGP is necessary to become vocationally registered for independent general practice in Australia under the Medicare system.
In 2005, the RACGP developed a set of standards designed to ensure that general practice training and assessment met the standards required to prepare those entering unsupervised general practice in Australia.
"Standards for General Practice Education and Training: Programs and Providers" details requirements for providers of GP training.
"Standards for General Practice Education and Training: Trainers and Training Posts" details requirements of training posts and of GP trainers at those posts.
"Requirements for Fellowship" details the requirements for achievement of FRACGP via the various pathways to Fellowship.
"Companion document for Requirements V.12 (Advanced Life Support or ALS) and V.13” clarifies the processes associated with V.12 and V.13 of the RACGP Standards for General Practice Education: Requirements for Fellowship. ALS is a requirement for a registrar to complete vocational training. The RACGP has recently improved its processes for ALS, providing Regional Training Providers with greater autonomy to determine how a registrar meets this requirement under the RACGP 2005 Standards for Vocational Training towards Fellowship. The enhanced processes are outlined in the Companion document for Requirements V.12 and V.13 attached below. The new processes will come into effect for all new AGPT registrars from July 1, 2011. Registrars who are currently enrolled in the AGPT program and were enrolled prior to 1 July 2011 are required to complete an approved ALS course during their time in the training program. The currency of training requirement for ALS will be reviewed and implemented only for those registrars joining the AGPT program after July 1, 2011.
