The Australian Sentinel Practices Research Network (ASPREN)

ASPREN is a network of sentinel general practitioners run through the RACGP and University of Adelaide that has collected de-identified information on influenza like illness and other conditions seen in general practice since 1991. The network is part of the Commonwealth's bio-surveillance strategy for preparedness for emerging diseases and pandemic influenza surveillance. Data collected by ASPREN acts as an early warning system in the event of an influenza pandemic.

We are calling for expressions of interest from general practitioners across Australia, particularly in rural and regional areas, to increase the number and representativeness of ASPREN general practitioners Australia wide.

GPs are required to electronically submit de-identified patient data on influenza like illness on an ongoing basis and may also choose to collect information on other conditions. ASPREN GPs can submit patient data via one of 3 ways; the Canning Flu Tool which allows for automated de-identified data extraction from patient records, a state of the art web-based system, which is quick and easy to navigate (see attached screen shots,), or by paper based return. Participating GPs will be eligible for up to 40 category 1 and 30 category 2 RACGP QI&CPD (or equivalent ACRRM points) points and receive up to date, first-hand information about infectious disease trends around Australia on a fortnightly basis (see attached copy of ASPREN update) as well as monetary compensation for swabs taken. Both individuals and practices are welcome to be part of ASPREN.

Interested GPs are asked to attend a meeting with the coordinator via GoToMeetings, where the GP will be briefed on the program, trained on the use of the software and oversee remote installation of the software.  This takes approximately 45 minutes.  For any further information, please contact monique.chilver@adelaide.edu.au tel: (08) 8313 3463 or fax 08 8313 3511.
