2005 Highlights

The RACGPs 48th Annual Scientific Convention attracted record delegate attendance. More than 600 delegates from Australia and overseas took part in a dynamic Scientific Program over four days in Darwin. Outside of the scientific program, delegates and their families enjoyed a diverse range of social activities, all of which contributed to a memorable experience in the Top End.

Social Program

The comprehensive ASC social program was a huge success, with hundreds of delegates and their families joining in a diverse range of social activities in and around Darwin

Delegates and their children had the unique opportunity to visit the Larrakia Aboriginal community and learn how to paint a Boomerang. Participants also learned about bush tucker and Aboriginal dance. The Larrakia community ran this activity especially for the ASC, and it was unquestionably a highlight of the social program.

Every day at the high tide at Doctor's Gully, hundreds of fish come to be fed by hand. A special tour was organised for guests to enjoy this 'must do' activity in Darwin. Milkfish, mullet, catfish, bream, and barramundi came close enough to be touched as they competed with each other for food. Voted the most popular attraction in tourism surveys, this unique activity entertained guests of all ages.

The Conference Dinner was unquestionably a highlight of the Convention. It was the largest dinner that the College has held in recent years. For the first time the GP of the Year dinner was held in the open air, on the shores of the Arafura Sea. Following a breathtaking sunset over the sea guests enjoyed a magnificent dinner in a unique setting. After the formalities of the evening concluded, the talented RACGP band The Cyclonics set the dance floor alive and made the GP of the Year Awards dinner one of the most memorable scientific convention events to date.

The crocodiles at Crocodylus Park dazzled, enchanted and entertained 65 RACGP guests on a special half day tour. Built upon staff's years of experience in crocodile research and conservation, Crocodylus Park plays host to over 10 000 crocodiles which put on a spectacular show. The close up encounter will never be forgotten!
