Private Billing: For You to Understand, For You to Decide

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioner's (RACGP's) kit titled - Private Billing: for you to understand, for you to decide, has been developed in response to RACGP members who have asked for advice on how to objectively assess the value in, or prepare for the introduction of, private billing.

General Practitioners (GPs) who already private bill, but are interested in changing the percentage of consultations privately billed will also find the kit useful, as may all GPs regardless of their billing decision. This is due to the kit's inclusion of broad business management tools.

The kit is modelled from the balanced scorecard approach, which measures reporting indicators beyond financial outcomes. In addition to financial goals, clinical and practice, continuing education, and personal goals are also assessed.

Topics covered in the kit include: a practice audit, understanding competitive advantage, setting goals and objectives, establishing a fees policy, setting a fee, managing risk, developing a billing process, creating a communications strategy, and monitoring and reviewing.
