Extraordinary everyday experiences in Australian general practice

Our stories

At this time of rapid change and mounting challenges, it is imperative for general practitioners to look beyond their personal horizons and embrace a bigger story. Seldom has an inventory of the personal beliefs and sense of values underpinning our work been more needed to sustain us.

The rich array of stories presented here reflect the diversity of members of The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (the RACGP) - GPs from outback to inner city locations, medical students, life members, overseas trained doctors and those with special interests. Each of the stories is very different - some reflect on life lessons and overarching values, others give a narrative account of key incidents in the author's career. The common thread between them is a sense of dedication, perseverance and humility, qualities that are illustrated through experiences with patients, family and self care.

This collection will no doubt invoke memories of your own, and inspire thought about the privileges, burdens and personal transformations experienced in general practice. The RACGP invites all GPs to contribute stories to the next volume in this initiative, an effort to document the diversity of general practice.

Who or what inspires you to continue after a difficult day? When your heart sinks or your eyes fill with tears, what is it that lifts your spirits once again? How do you react to those unforgettable encounters when you are faced with overwhelming evidence of the value of your work?

Every GP has an extraordinary story to tell and we would love to hear yours. All GPs are encouraged to contribute. Please send your story (the suggested length is 600 words) to Leanne Rowe at leanne. rowe@racgp.org.au by 1 August 2006 to be considered for publication in the next volume, planned as a large scale book of our stories.
