The RACGP recognises the real willingness of general practitioners (GPs) and their practice teams to continue to care for people who may have a propensity for violence, but it also recognises the right of GPs and their teams to feel, and be, safe.

Internationally there has been increasing interest in client-initiated violence in the health care sector. In Australia there has been heightened interest in the safety of general practice and primary care teams since the murder of Dr. Khulod Maarouf-Hassan in 2006.
