What is the future of cultural safety training? Report on the post-pilot development of training for GPs to assist them to work better with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
Tim Leahy, Gloria Khan, Michael Doyle Aboriginal Health Council of WA, Perth, Western Australia
Objectives
At the end of this session participants will:
- understand the recent history and achievements of this project and challenges to the national implementation of cultural safety training for GPs
- have had the opportunity to discuss the project and plans for national roll out of the training.
Methods
The first part of the presentation will update the audience with progress on this project. National piloting, with subsequent internal and external evaluation of the training and the modules, has lead to the recommendation that they be rolled out nationally. This will require assistance, commitments from a range of groups and partnerships. We will report on our results and plans.
Implications
The implications for policy and further action by GPs are various and will be discussed. If comprehensive education of GPs in ways to improve Aboriginal health is to progress, then continued commitment from GPs and local partnerships will need ongoing support. This needs to come from Departments of Health, GP groups (especially RACGP and divisions) and Aboriginal health organisations.
