Membership categories, types and fees

Membership categories

General practitioners can join the RACGP in four main membership categories, as provided under the college’s constitution or Memorandum and Articles of Association:

  • Fellow- Fellowship of the RACGP (FRACGP) is granted to medical practitioners who have successfully completed the college fellowship examination and who have satisfied college council of their competence through training or experience. Find out more
  • Member- medical practitioners who have a minimum of 7 years postgraduate medical experience, of which 5 years (or a part time equivalent to a maximum of 10 years) is in general practice, are eligible to apply for membership. Alternatively, Members may have specific qualifications obtained in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, or the United Kingdom.
  • Associate- Associate members are required to be registered medical practitioners.
  • Eligible Associate- general practice registrars who are participating in general practice vocational training, are eligible to become Eligible Associate members.

All college members (except general practice registrars undertaking vocational training) are required to participate in the QA&CPD Program as part of their college membership.

All Fellows, Members and Associates are affiliated with state and territory faculties, unless they are a resident overseas. Members living and practising in rural or remote areas automatically receive additional complimentary National Rural Faculty membership, however, any college member with an interest in rural or remote general practice may choose to join the National Rural Faculty. Fellows, Members and Eligible Associates (ie general practice registrars ) have full voting rights. Associates do not have full voting rights but may attend the RACGP’s Annual General Meeting and vote for the President’s allowance.

Affiliate memberships

In addition to the membership categories, the college also provides support to specific groups through affiliated membership:

  • Student: current medical students and students in undergraduate courses for graduate medical programs such as Bachelor of Medical or Biomedical Science. Find out more
  • Affiliate: practice managers, practice nurses and staff of general practice organisations.
  • International Medical Graduate – Affiliate: overseas trained doctors who are permanently resident in Australia, but not registered or eligible for registration as a medical practitioner in Australia. For more information call 1800 331 626.

Member Not in Active Clinical General Practice
GP not currently in practice or registered medical practitioner employed in other fields and specialties

$497.50 (incl $45.23 GST)

Member on Parental, Sick or Other Leave

Member not intending to practise for the financial year

$397.50 (incl $36.14 GST)

General Practice Registrar

$299.00 (incl $27.18 GST)

Resident and Intern

• Includes full range of RACGP member services

• Excludes the RACGP QA&CPD Program and RACGP research grants

Senior Member

Practising GP who is aged 70 years and over

$199.00 (incl $18.09 GST)

Retired Member

GP permanently retired from general practice

Member for more than 35 consecutive years

Members residing overseas for majority of the financial year
