Health priorities

The RACGP considers the following areas to be health priorities.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health

The problems for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples which have been generated by over 200 years of accumulated loss and dispossession cannot be turned around without the commitment of governments and non-government organisations as well as the Australian community as a whole. To this end the RACGP works in partnership with the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) and the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) to support a range of activities in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

Mental health

Mental Health has been identified as one of several National Health Priority areas, and general practice provides more episodes of mental health care than the specialist mental health sector. This section brings together a range of information, resources, contacts and links of interest to GPs. Enquiries to the RACGP relating to mental health should be directed to mentalhealth@racgp.org.au

Health Care For Refugees And Asylum Seekers

As the body representing GPs who provide the bulk of medical care to such people, the RACGP is concerned that standards of basic health care similar to those received by all Australians are accessible to all refugees and asylum seekers being processed by Australia, on and off shore.
